Risk-Taker
I feel that the piece of work that best brings out my characteristics as a risk-taker is the design technology project completed in textiles. This assessment required me to work in an unfamiliar surrounding, to come up with a real life problem with regards to sustainability, and solve it with a textiles products. This unit is assessed upon investigation, design, planning, creating, evaluating skills and my attitude towards learning.
This textiles project best represented myself as a risk-taker as I was bold to try a new type of design creation even though I have never been exposed to textiles in the past. Although I it was difficult to construct designs with my limited knowledge on my available skills and resources, I attempted this unfamiliar form of creativity with passion and thought. Within the process of investigation and design, I learnt to attempt and communicate ideas from different perspectives that I have never reach out to before which can be expressed as “thinking out of the box”. This represented myself as a risk-taker as I was willing to try something new although I was confused and unfamiliar with the technique.
The main title of this unit is “How can I use previous Technology knowledge, with an increased awareness of sustainability, to solve and market a real-world design opportunity?” I began this unit by brainstorming the possible issues our selected target market face in real life, and creating a structured research plan to determine the different aspects of textiles such as how to use a sewing machine, crating pockets, working with zippers and buttons, etc. to assist us in creating the product to solve the issue. Next, I came up with a list of specifications to assist me in designing and creating an useful solution for the target market. Using the knowledge gained from the investigation stage, I brainstormed four initial ideas for a solution. Through development and critical evaluation against specifications, I come up with a feasible solution for my final design. In the create stage of this project, I created a series of instructions including: a cutting list, detailed production plan, general risk assessment in response to time issues, flow chart of procedures, full scale models update of design, peer/self evaluation and a finalized list of specifications. Furthermore, I have fully documented my creation process with photographic evidence, reflected on all areas of the design cycle and tested out my product in my evaluation stage. Lastly, I have stated the solution’s relation to real life in terms of it’s impact on users, society and the environment.
In general, I consider this textiles project as an successful assessment that represented my characteristics of a risk-taker through trying new things and thinking through different perspective for things.
