CREATIVITY
Trashion
For the past two years as a model for the trashion show, it has truly evoked my interest of what it would be like to design my own line of recycled clothing for a change. With this in mind, Ashley, Leona and I submitted entries of the theme “Alice in Wonderland”, and was lucky enough to be selected for the show. The decision to enter this year’s trashion show as a designer clearly demonstrated my traits as a risk taker, as I am well aware of the perseverance and commitment that is required from us, as well as the difficulties we will face in the long six months leading up to the show. Our final collection consisted of four different outfits, each reflecting the significant traits of different characters within the movie.
In the process of designing and creating the garments, I have undertaken many new challenges. As all members in our groups are neither textiles or art students, we faced many difficulties in making a feasible and aesthetically pleasing dress. We carried out experimentations and research from various sources, eventually acquiring the basic skills of making a garment. Furthermore, as most of our models are not from our school, it was difficult to coordinate measurements, fitting, rehearsals and time to make the dresses above our hectic IB schedule. Despite the barriers we faced, I fully utilize my organization skills in order to successfully complete the design and creating process.
Through this experience, I have come to the realization that the most important aspect to success is teamwork. Working collaboratively with each other did not merely mean that we must split the work up evenly between everyone in the team, but also the importance of fully utilizing each persons strengths and assisting each other in areas of their weaknesses. I contributed by being responsible for making the structure of two and a half of the dresses, as well as spray painting and completing the details on two of the dresses. I’ve also learnt that in order to a qualified and an outstanding part of the team, it is important to be open-minded in accepting and compromising between opinions which I may not necessarily agree to.
Furthermore, I have heightened my awareness and consideration towards ethical implications through joining this project. As this is “Trash”ion, all our dresses were required to be made out of recycled materials. From the process of deciding and collecting materials, I realized the large amounts of waste produced by my family and school on a daily basis, making me stop and consider how we can reduce and reuse the waste materials created. The trashion group has also engaged with issues of global importance, as parts of the funds raised from tickets and pastries sold at the show goes to charity, as well as funding for recent Nepal earthquake.
Overall, I am very pleased with our efforts that have went into our final collection and making this year’s Trashion a successful show on the 2nd of May. I have practices my organization and self-management skills to work under the intense time pressure, and have also successfully created a fair balance between schoolwork and the designing process.

RCHK Movement
One of the biggest challenges I have undertaken this year, is to become a performer in the RCHK Movement group. I initially signed up for this activity in the hopes of experiencing something which I would have never dared to do before, as well as simply to support my friends, as this activity is currently a CAS project run by my friends. This year, I have participated in the dance for both Christmas and Chinese new year assembly.
As I am not extremely talented in the musical field, I found it difficult to learn and memorize the many different moves in the dance. Despite the difficulties I face, I was willing to undertake and overcome new challenges, through spending additional time out of rehearsals to practice dance skills, which all seem to foreign to me. Although I did not fully master the dance in the short periods of rehearsal time we had, I still developed new skills in terms of being more accustomed to identifying rhythm and basic dance moves. Furthermore, I worked collaboratively with others in performing various group or partnered movements, as well as with the coordinators, who were willing to spend additional time in helping me refine my dance moves out of rehearsals. We were willing to adjust and comply to each others hectic schedules,
Lastly, as a member of the team, I demonstrated great perseverance and commitment through my enthusiasm and preservation during rehearsals, in the hopes of not letting everyone else down during our performances. I did not give up when faced with difficulties, but instead searched for ways to avoid or solve the issue. During the performing seasons, I attended a minimum of three to four weekly rehearsals each week, which in turn allowed me to perform at an acceptable standard during the two performances.

Chinese New Year Assembly Drama Performance
This year, I participated in the Chinese New Year assembly as a performer for the drama skit, along with may other students. It was an interesting and new experience for me, as I am a relatively conservative person, whom rarely choose to perform on stage in front of a large audience. Through this drama skit, I increased awareness of my strengths and areas for growth, as I realized that I do not suffer from stage fright as much as I though I would before. Furthermore, as I am a Chinese B student, thoroughly understanding memorizing some of the more complicated dialogues in the script become one of the new challenges I had to overcome, as well as my lack of experience in performing. In preparation for the performance, I spent various break times and after school session to practice our time, demonstrating my perseverance and commitment to this activity. Overall, I learnt that confidence is an important skill I need to further develop, as it will be the fundamental requirement of my future dream as a doctor.
