Communicators
The piece of work I chose to reflect my abilities as an effective communicator is the natural forms completed in Art. The developmental workbook of this unit consists of my background research, creative thinking process, reflections and the multimedia final piece with a natural forms theme. This assessment is graded based on all criterions, and forms my final in-term three art grade.
I chose this natural forms unit as it represented my qualities of a communicator in more than one way. I used good communication skills to express my feelings with a large variety of media and art techniques. Within the creative thinking process, I was able to build a vivid and powerful image of different natural forms, conveying different emotions and memories to the audience. This showed that I could effectively communicate my intended ideas with the audience through different means, other than traditional painting and drawing. As this assessment also required peers to comment on my designs for developmental stages, it shows that I am able to verbally communicate my ideas as an artists through my artist statement and annotations with the audience.
As this assessment is a complete unit, it consists of the different stages of my creative processes and records my experience throughout the work. I began by completing a criterion A research task based on other natural forms artists: their biographies, analysis of their artwork, artists relationships, recreations of their work, as well as a brief statement of how I can adapt their styles into my own piece. This forms my basic knowledge of the unit. Next we completed a series of art experiments with different medias such as paper cutting, lino printing, color applications, textures, etc. These tests helped me to discover the different forms of media that I can use for my final piece, as well determine whether there is unity between the elements. A brief reflection of my thoughts was recorded for each test. Next, I created four initial designs based on inspiration acquired from the previous tests, as well as obtained peer feedback and personal reflection on each piece. Through the reflection stage, I have determined that the most effective design is idea one, whilst individual elements from design three and four was also very effective. Hence, I have incorporated these elements through my developmental stage into the final design. After feedback if the final design, I have made minor changes to the use of space in my composition, and created my final piece. Lastly, I reflected on all stages of this unit through my final reflection.
I feel that there are both areas where I did good and bad in in this assessment. I feel that I was able to show the qualities of a good communicator by effectively using different forms of media and a large variety of ideas to convey my emotions towards the audience. From my teacher’s comments, I was able to identify that my drawing and painting skills have massively improved from the previous “Memories” unit. Furthermore, my application of nail varnish and thin wires due to the limited timescale and resources at home was also highly praised. Although I have done well as a communicator, I feel that in some skill areas, I had a poor use of expression, which affected the impression of the final piece. If I have another chance to work on this unit, I would try to further refine each art technique to better express my thoughts towards the audience.
