Choice Reflection
The past year have definitely been an eventful year for me, enhanced by many different memories as well as high and lows. As this is my first year studying the IB Diploma, it has been expected that there will be many obstacles and stress that I will need to overcome, but the overall experience is definitely one that will bring me a long way in the future. The main difference between Diploma and MYP, is the level of detail and materials that needs to be learnt, which increases the amount of time and effort required in order to succeed. Along with the responsibility of a scholar in contributing to the RCHK community, Diploma students are also required to consistently participate in various creativity, action, services and leadership roles throughout the year. The additional activities and commitment I have engaged myself in this year are all carefully selected to be contribute towards my dream of pursing a career in the medical field in the future.
As one of the eldest members in the RCHK community, it is our responsibility to act as a role model for younger students and take up more leadership roles, which is also an highly emphasized characteristic which is expected of a scholar. In previous years, my goal have always been to participate and be committed to activities, but I have attempted to expand and challenge myself in up taking various leadership roles this year. One of the most memorable experiences is definitely a CAS project I initiated this year, where I created an after school activity opportunity for students to experience rock climbing. The role of a co-ordinator in this event is extremely difficult, as a sport with such high levels of safety considerations required much coordination and communication with the school's PE and administrative department in order to be carried out. Despite the heavy workload I already bear, good communication and organization skills I have developed over the years have assisted me in succeeding in this task, and seeing other students enjoying the effort I have put in made me feel that it is worth it. This leadership opportunity has enriched my skills in becoming a qualified and successful leader, as well as allowing me to recognize my strengths and weaknesses in this field. Other notable leadership roles I have participated in this year includes Year 12 Focus Group member and Black Kites Athletic Council member, both of which are positions which allow e to better contribute student perspectives to other leadership figures in the hopes of creating a better school community for others.

Another activity which I found to be extremely memorable is our Year 12 CAS Trip to Bali. I have gained a lot from this experience, whether it was experiencing the issues of poverty we often study about in textbooks, testing our perseverance and commitment to the service despite being physically or emotionally worn out, or simply the many new challenges I faced and friends that I have made with people who I do not usually interact with in school. Our volunteer sessions at the Side by Side farm has really made me reflect on how fortunate we are to receive an opportunity to study under such abundant and resourceful environments, as well as teaching me to be more empathetic and considerate towards others.
My dream is to purse a career in the medical field, and I feel that I have come a long way in preparing to achieve this dream. It has been a challenge for me to study various related subjects such as higher level chemistry and biology, but through exceptional work ethics and commitment, I am gradually gaining a better understanding of these subjects. I understand that medicine is an extremely competitive subject in Hong Kong, and the only possible way for me to achieve this dream, is to posses of an active and positive attitude towards my learning. Furthermore, I have selected a topic related to human consumption of lactase (milk sugar) in biology for my extended essay, which I hope will allow future university interviewers to better understand my passion for human and medical science. Overall, this year has been filled with it's high and lows, but I can proudly say that I faced each challenge and obstacle I come across with an attitude and the support of my family and friends. I plan to further improve my organizations skills in order to achieve higher academic excellences and future goals, as well as further contribute to the RCHK and Hong Kong community. |
