Inquirer
The electrolysis investigation lab report is a summative assessment assigned in chemistry by Mr. Diamond. This assessment reflected myself as an Inquirer in many ways that is significant to my path of learning. This piece of work is assessed by criterion D, E and F.
During this electrolysis lab report, I demonstrated myself as an Inquirer through many ways. I displayed my natural curiosity and asked questions about how increasing voltage affects the rate of electrolysis, and how the effect of electrolysis can be physically seen through the use of electrodes. Through this investigation, I acquired more developed referencing and researching skills in order to compose a reliable and legitimate conclusion of the investigation. I also demonstrated myself as an Inquirer as I was independent in learning during this research based assessment.
This lab report is based on an investigation we conducted in class to investigate how increasing voltage affects the rate of electrolysis by measuring the change in mass of the cathode in a given time. We were not given specific instructions on how we could carry out this investigation, or which factor we should investigate, hence it allowed us to learn independently. My group mates and I chose increase the current steadily by two during each test, whilst carrying out three repetitions for each test to ensure reliability. We then recorded our results of how difference between initial and final of the negative electrode.
In order to be able to come to a conclusion of why my results showed such a pattern, I conducted basic research based on factors that would affect the the rate of electrolysis. I planned my investigation by clearly labeling all of the steps I needed to complete to produce a clear and accurate lab report. I listed the variables of the investigation and produced a detailed method plan before I carried out the investigation to guarantee smooth and reliable results. In my conclusion, I stated the reason why the trend appeared in my results with research of scientific explanations to reinforce my conclusion. I used the researching and referencing skills to provide a reliable conclusion. In my evaluation, I reflected on my faults and experimental errors during this investigation that could have affected the reliability of my results. I critically analyzed my method and results from different perspectives to ensure the reliability of my results and to learn from my mistakes in preparation for the next lab report.
Overall, this had been a successful investigation where I demonstrated my traits of an inquirer. I acquired new skills that aided me during the investigation and displayed independence during my learning process. I also feel that this was a reliable investigation as I produced a detailed method and critically analyzed my results. My experiences and the knowledge learnt would be sustainable through life.
